China Since late June 2024, phase two of Shanghai Museum East’s opening has been underway. To celebrate this milestone and the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Botanical Garden, the Museum and Botanical Garden have jointly launched the exhibition "The Harmony of Wood and Stone: Scholar's Rocks of Jiangnan and Shanghai-Style Penjing." Showcased in the newly opened Jiangnan Gallery and Roof Garden, the exhibition presents classical and innovative interpretations of ornamental rocks and penjing, reflecting the cultural essence of Jiangnan and Shanghai. This exhibit highlights Jiangnan's historical passion for ornamental rocks, cherished by scholars since the Tang Dynasty, alongside Shanghai-style penjing, an art form with over 400 years of heritage. The fusion of rocks and penjing in the Roof Garden creates a tranquil Jiangnan-style scene that embodies the aesthetic ideals of traditional Chinese culture. The exhibit celebrates the resilience of Shanghai, blending its deep cultural roots with modern vibrancy.
