THE PALACE MUSEUM'S SPRING FESTIVAL SHOW

Recommended by Collections of the Palace Museum and OGP Collectors Club.

EndedThe Palace Museum. 4 Jingshan Front St, Dongcheng, Beijing, China

Service Description

The Palace Museum presents "Celebrating the Spring Festival in the Forbidden City" from 6 January to 7 April 2019 in the galleries atop the Meridian Gate in honour of the most magnificent of all traditional Chinese holidays (Wu men). The holiday, known in China as Spring Festival (Chun jie), is celebrated around the world as Chinese New Year. Each lunar year begins sometime between late January and late February of the solar year, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. The Year of the Pig or jihai year is 2019. This exhibition will run from the first day of the previous lunar month until the Double Third Festival (Shangsi jie). This exhibition features a display of historical art in the Meridian Gate's central and wing galleries, as well as festive décor throughout the Forbidden City. The exhibition is divided into six sections that introduce the historical events: I. Invocation of Good Fortune. Filial Sacrifice II. Third, Imperial Kinship. IV. Astute Governance. V. Winter Sports. VI. Universal Pleasures. The exhibition "Celebrating the Spring Festival in the Forbidden City" is significant for two reasons. The galleries house the most art in the largest exhibition area for a single exhibition in the Museum's history, with well over 700 works. The expansive galleries and thematic décor throughout the imperial palace's visiting areas make unprecedented use of space and artwork. Aside from these two landmarks, the east side-gallery of the Palace of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing gong) features an immersive digital experience that includes virtual reality, motion capture, and other interactive technologies.
