Oh Good Party
The three most basic elements of a gemstone are rare, durable, and beautiful. These three elements are indispensable. Rarely determines the economic value of the gemstone. Durability determines the collection value of the gemstone, and the aesthetic value determines the artistic value of the gemstone. The most important thing is — circulation around the world.
There are many international jewellery fairs on every country in the world. From January to December, the collection of gemologists, and members of collectors' clubs from the OGP Commodities Department explores precious gems. We meet different gemstones dealers, mineral mine owners and gem research scholars to discuss the purchase and value of gemstones around the world.
In Malaysia International Jewellery Festival (MIJ) in January, VICENZAORO in Italy, Jewellers International Showcase (JIS) in Miami Beach, USA, Brilliant Antwerp Diamond Trade Fair, JUNWEX St Petersburg; In February, AGTA Gemfair Tucson, JCK Las Vegas, Inhorgenta Munich; In March, The Chennai Jewellery & Gem Fair ( CJGF ) , Myanmar Jade Jewelry Fair, JA New York Spring, BASELWORLD; In April, Mideast Watch & Jewellery Show, China International Jewelry Fair; At the Shanghai International Jewelry Show in the month, you can see the enthusiasm, and obsession of the gems by the collectors of OGP. Of course not only this, Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair in June, the Singapore International Jewelry Expo 2019 in July, Australian Jewellery Fair - Brisbane, and the Japan Jewellery Fair (JJF) in August; International Jewellery London in September; International Jewellery & Watch Show ABU Dhabi in October, UAE; Dubai International Jewellery Show, and Tai Wan Jewellery Fair in November...the footprints that would not stop until Christmas days. In addition, OGP's collectors also wouldn't miss some famous auction houses event, and some regional gemstones, and ores exhibitions that are extremely popular to us.
Among these exhibitions, our collectors are particularly fond of and must not miss every year:
AGTA Gemfair Tucson in Arizona, USA, was jointly organized by the American Jewelry Minerals Association and the American International Exchange Group (AIE). It is a collection of exquisite mineral specimens from internationally renowned jewellery brands and many experienced gem dealers. It can be said that in addition to the BASELWORLD, it's the largest jewellery exhibition, and not just jewelry, but also a variety of rare minerals.
BASELWORLD is the favourite of the elites, especially the best world watches are also a gorgeous visual feast, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Bulgari, Chopard, Breitling, Tudor, Carl F. Bucherer and so on. It's the best item to present the top identity that highlights your tastes.
It is particularly worth mentioning that The European Fine Art and Antiques Fair (TEFAF) is definitely a must-see for collectors every March. This year, exhibits from 276 exhibitors, and top art galleries around the world, exhibits in dozens of art fields, ancient art, antiques, design, fine jewelry, contemporary art and so on. As a veteran gem collector, precious gemstones: diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are rarely guaranteed to be under 10 carats, and usually buy top-quality items of 20-50 carats or more. Furthermore, the Myanmar jadeite jade, which is preferred by the Chinese, has also become a rising star in the past two decades, and its price has even surpassed the four gemstones recognized in the past 100 years.
In the case of diamonds, a diamond of 10 carats or more will be the ultimate gift for a special anniversary. Natural gemstones that typically weigh more than 10 carats on the market are very rare and difficult to obtain. Diamonds are priced from $16.720 to $224,510.10 carats per carat. If you want to calculate the price of a 10 carat diamond, the price per carat must be multiplied by 10 times. The GIA provides a report that the average price of a 10-carat diamond is between $167,200 and $2,245,100. If it’s a coloured diamond, then the price will be way higher.
The monthly Diamond Registry® bulletin (only for diamond prices), The GemGuide released every two months, and the Michelsen Gemstone Index released at every season, which offering diamonds (including coloured diamonds) and coloured gemstones, will give you instant Learn about the gems purchases.
As for ruby, since 2015, it has been the darling of the jewelry collection industry. The unheated, untreated, and large carats of the "Myanmar pigeon blood" red ruby have been updated every year. Every auction will produce an unbeatable price. In 2015, Sotheby's auction sold a production of 25.59ct unheated Myanmar pigeon blood red ruby ring for $30.518 million. And Christie's auction also sold a 15.04ct unheated Myanmar pigeon blood red ruby ring for $18.82 million. In 2016, a 78.95ct/94pcs natural Myanmar pigeon blood red ruby with a total weight of 83.27ct of diamond necklaces sold for RMB 7,130,000. In 2017, Harry Winston's pair of gross weights of 15.08 carats Myanmar pigeon blood red ruby Earrings, which still is the main stone are unheated, the colour and clarity is good, the certificate provided by SSEF and AGL, is sold at RMB 8,050,000. In 2018, Sotheby's auction sold a 24.7ct Myanmar pigeon blood red ruby for $11 million. Christie's auction sold a 10.04ct Myanmar pigeon blood ruby for $7.23 million (each carat price of $ 720,481).
Ruby's output is less, almost every 400 tons of ruby ore, but finally can extract about 1 carat of corundum. After the second screening, nearly 1,000 carats of red corundum, but only 1 carat stone can reach the gem level. Among them, it's even rarer to reach the "pigeon blood red" level. This also led to the price increase of ruby is faster than any gems. Our conservatively estimated that the price to be increase 5 times in years to come. If the higher the level of ruby, the higher the increase.
The volume of sapphire and emerald transactions is not particularly noticeable compared to diamonds and rubies, but there are also good deals. Last year, in 2018, Christie's auction house sold a "The Peacock Necklace" with a 109.08ct Kashmir sapphire and diamonds necklace for nearly $15 million, set a world record for the Kashmiri sapphire necklace auction. And, a designed by Van Cleef & Arpels with emerald and diamond necklace from Colombia with a main stone weight of 24.32ct and some small emerald weighing approximately 10.53ct for $1,572,500.
From our 2018 jewellery sales list of Christie’s and Sotheby’s, we totalled $963 million, a decrease of 17.6% from $1.1 billion in the same period last year. Among them, Christie's was $492.3 million, down 11.5%; Sotheby's was $414 million, down 25%. The decline in this number shows that collectors' pursuit of top quality is becoming more, and more critical. This is a worldwide situation, but more obvious in Asia.
It can also be seen that the strongest category of coloured gemstone investment properties is still the four precious stones, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, as well as the jadeite jade that the Chinese love very much. The current purchasing power of Chrysoberyl in the traditional four gemstones has been reduced compared to these five categories, because the value of gemstones is greatly affected by cultural inertia, but these five categories have a highly mature market, and the value-preserving properties have been widely accepted. From the data released by Christie's and Sotheby's every year, these five categories occupy the top five trading volume, and the market activity is very high.
Inferior gems have no value, and top quality gems are scarce resources.

The investment of coloured gemstones is a medium- and long-term investment behaviour with high knowledge intensity. If investment is the purpose, investors first need to have sufficient understanding of coloured gemstone investment products, and familiar with the classification of various coloured gemstones; Secondly, investors are familiar with the price trends of coloured gemstones over the years; The last point is that investors need to have more reliable access to investment products and professional appraisal institutions (GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, IGI, etc.).
